Add Color to Your Workout: Take It Outdoors!
Reviewed by Tama D. Bloch, RD, LD

Research clearly shows that color can affect our moods.1 For example, looking at blue light has been shown to lower blood pressure. Because color comes from daylight, it makes sense that fresh-air fitness is a great way to incorporate the mood-enhancing benefits of color into your day. Here's how!

Color Is Everywhere
It's easy to add color to your workout just by getting out of the gym and observing the landscape. Outdoor activities give you a chance to experience what nature has to offer, whether you're kayaking down a pristine blue river or hiking a trail bursting with fall color.

Color Sets a Mood
For swimming newbies or those who want a less demanding water experience, consider paddle boating, fishing, water bikes, or a water trampoline.

Hit the Beach!
Here are some ways to enjoy color during physical activities:

  • Need to Calm Down? Exercise Near Water!
If you're working off stress, try physical activities near water. The turquoise and blue hues in water will help calm you. Better yet, take a swim in a clear blue pool or a crystal-clean lake.
  • Need to Rev Up? Enjoy the Fall Leaves!
Need a little morning pick-me-up? Take a short walk and enjoy a natural energizer: nature's colors of the season. The flaming red and gold fall leaves will stimulate your brain naturally. If you live in a region where leaves don't change, dress in bright colors. You'll get the same benefit.

Color Provides Safety!
If you're exercising outdoors, particularly if you're walking or biking, wear bright colors. Even if you're out on a sunny day — but especially if you're exercising at night — wear bright yellow, red, orange, or reflective green to help you stand out and stay safe.

Color is one of the most fulfilling elements in our lives. It speaks to who we are and how we feel. So, clear your head and enjoy nature's entire color palette by taking your workout outside.
