Fit and Fabulous Vacations

Enjoy a Variety of Physical Activities Wherever You Go
Brenda Fix, RD, PhD, CDE, BC-ADM

You're finally going on vacation and looking forward to leaving the hectic pace of summer. But, wait — you recently joined an exercise class at the local gym, and you've noticed your clothes are fitting a little looser. You're concerned about giving up this rewarding activity while on vacation, where there may not be a gym within 50 miles. Not to worry! You may not be able to pursue your standard exercise routine, but there are still plenty of physically active, fun things you can do while vacationing.

Heading for the Water?

  • Walk or run along the shore of a lake or ocean.
  • Learn to snorkel or simply take a daily swim.
  • Water-ski on a river or lake.
  • Canoe or take a rowboat down a creek.

Going Back to Nature?

  • Ride a horse.
  • Hike on nearby trails in a rural setting or state park.
  • Rent bikes and take a scenic ride.
  • Take a tour of area caves.

Exploring a New City?

  • Jump rope in your hotel room.
  • Dance at a local club.
  • Tour museums and other landmarks.
  • Create your own sightseeing tour from available maps — and walk it!

Remember, you can combine physical activities with a relaxing, good time. After all, that's what a fabulous vacation is all about!
