By Abby C. Sauer, MPH, RD, LD Most of us know what colors we look or feel good in. Now scientists think the colors we prefer even reflect our personalities. And researchers are working on new clothing fabrics that will change color to match our moods or help us blend in with our environments. The mood ring has come a long way!
What do your color choices say about you? Here are a few favorites and what they suggest:
Black
- Creates a stylish, timeless fashion image
- Communicates authority and power
White
- Brightens and lightens your mood
- Conveys lightness and openness in a room
- Symbolizes innocence and purity
Red
- Conveys intensity, passion, and aggression
- Makes your heart and lungs beat faster
- Creates attraction and excitement
- Wakes up a room and is a great accent color
Blue
- Brings tranquility and peace
- May increase productivity
- Symbolizes loyalty — a great color to wear for a job interview
Green
- Calms and refreshes
- Symbolizes nature's stability and balance
- Nurtures and relaxes — hospitals often use green to relax patients
Yellow
- Grabs your attention
- Suggests optimism and fun but has a darker side: People tend to lose their tempers more often — and babies cry more — in yellow rooms
Purple
- Symbolizes royalty, wealth, and sophistication, as well as femininity and romance
- Calms your mood
- Connects you with your spiritual side
The next time you dress, think about the colors you choose. Whether you want to be sunny and optimistic or make a memorable statement, always take time to choose colors that make you feel good!
