When winter weather arrives, your skin can turn as rough as an alligator's. That's because winter air can rob moisture from your body. And when you crank up the heat in the house, your heating system may cause the humidity levels to plummet, increasing your chances for flaky skin. The good news: Dry skin is easier to prevent than to treat, and a little moisturizer can help a lot.
All winter long, and even into early spring, make sure you moisturize on a regular basis, paying special attention to your hands, shins, sides, and abdomen, where dry skin is commonly found. But everyone can prevent dry skin. Just use the tips below to make sure Jack Frost doesn't rob you of a smooth and healthy winter.
Here are some tips to prevent dry, flaky skin:
- Take lukewarm baths or showers. If you don't want to give up hot water, use bath oil.
- Use lip balm or petroleum jelly for dry lips.
- Use a moisturizing body soap in the winter. Deodorant soap is harsh on the skin.
- Try shaving with lotion instead of regular shaving cream, which may contain detergents.
- Apply a moisturizer right after drying off from a shower or washing your hands.
- Use heavier creams during the winter months. The greasier, the better in order to trap your skin's moisture so it won't evaporate.
- Drink plenty of fluids, like Ensure®, to provide your skin with vital moisture from the inside.
