Spring is here and summer's on the way. It's time to get out and exercise those winter-weary minds, legs, and lungs. While you're enjoying more active outdoor living, remember to protect your body's largest organ — the skin.
Beat the Burn
Sunburn is uncomfortable in the short term and potentially dangerous in the long term, as it can cause skin cancer as well as premature aging of the skin.
- Always use sunscreen when you're outdoors — even on overcast days.
- Use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 and higher SPF levels during peak sun hours of 10 AM to 3 AM.
- Choose products with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, oxybenzone, or avobenzone for strong protection. In general, avoid products with PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid); they can cause adverse reactions on sensitive skin.
- Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun and about every two hours.
- Wear hats or visors, and sunglasses, during lengthy stays outside or when the sun is hottest.
Eat Your Veggies
While studies show that the antioxidant compounds in fruits and vegetables may help reduce the damaging effects of the sun, they can't substitute for the barrier protection provided by sunscreen and clothing. However, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables supplies water and a whole host of nutrients essential for healthy skin.
Don't Get Bugged
Bug bites can cause angry, itchy welts, or even in some cases dangerous allergic reactions. Some types of mosquitoes and ticks can cause illness.
- Wear long sleeves, pants, hats, and closed shoes.
- Use a conventional insect repellent if there are no concerns about insect-borne diseases in your locale. Otherwise, products containing 25% to 35% DEET are considered effective for adults.
- Wash off with soap and water when you're back inside.
Also look for sun- and bug-protection clothing, now available in everything from swimwear to shirts, pants, and jackets. They offer chemical-free, broad-spectrum sun and bug protection that lasts through multiple washings. To experience the best of the great outdoors, protect the skin you're in!
