Nourish Your Smile
By Abby C. Sauer, MPH, RD, LD

What could be a better gift to yourself this holiday season than a healthy smile? You use it every day, and it can really make someone else's day special. According to the American Dental Association®, in addition to regular brushing and flossing, the key to a healthy smile is to choose foods and beverages wisely. Try these tips:

Limit Sugar and Starch

  • When we eat foods that have high concentrations of sugar and starch, the bacteria in our mouth produces acids that can destroy our teeth's enamel.
  • Choose sugar-free soda and gum, and limit sweets.

Snack Healthy

  • Eat a well-balanced diet that's rich in fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and low-fat dairy foods.
  • Limit between-meal snacks. Foods eaten as part of a meal cause less harm because more saliva is produced to help wash away food residue and reduce the acid in your mouth.

Drink Plenty of Water

  • Keeping your gums hydrated stimulates saliva production — your body's best defense against the bacteria that causes plaque and cavities.
  • Rinse your mouth after eating to help wash away trapped food particles.

Stay Away From Meals That Stain

  • Coffee, tea, red wine, and heavily dyed foods such as fruit drinks and dark-colored soda can stain your teeth. Limit these foods, as well as chocolate, berries, and beets.
  • Talk to your dentist about new options in teeth whitening.

Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, and if you want to add another brushing after meals, it won't hurt. Remember, the first thing people notice about you is your smile ...so take care of those pearly whites, and smile away!
