Are You at Risk?

Printer-friendly version

The following factors can affect your risk of developing osteoporosis. If you check more than one of these risk factors, talk to your doctor about having a bone density test.

Are you ...
  • Not eating a healthy diet?
Many nutrients affect bone health, especially calcium and vitamin D.
  • Female?
Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis.
  • Over 50?
Our natural bone-loss rate increases as we age.
  • Related to someone with osteoporosis?
    Heredity may be a factor.
  • Of Caucasian, Japanese, or Chinese descent?
These ethnic groups have a higher incidence of osteoporosis.
  • Affected by lowered sex hormone levels?
Low estrogen levels in women, and low testosterone levels in men, can contribute to bone loss.
  • Inactive?
    Inadequate exercise lessens bone strength.
  • A smoker or drinker?
These habits may promote bone loss.
  • On medication?
Ask your physician if your medication has an effect on bone density.
  • Chronically ill?
Many chronic illnesses increase the risk of osteoporosis.
