8 Tips to Rev Up Your Appetite

Printer-friendly version

Sometimes your treatment may change the way food tastes to you. It can also cause a decrease in your appetite. Here are some new and tempting ways to make your favorite dishes appealing again.
  • If meat tastes too strong, substitute fish, chicken, eggs, or cheese instead. Or try marinating meats in soy sauce, sweet fruit juices, or wine before cooking.
  • Protein foods may taste better at room temperature. Eat these foods within an hour of removing from the refrigerator: cheese; tuna, chicken, ham, or egg salads; deviled eggs; milkshakes, eggnogs, puddings, and custards.
  • Use fresh fruits to add flavor to milkshakes, puddings, and custards.
  • Try seasonings such as lemon juice, mint, basil, and other herbs and spices to perk up the taste and smell of food. Add sugar and salt to foods if your intake is not restricted.
  • Use medical nutritional products such as Ensure® for a pleasant and convenient way to get complete, balanced nutrition. The Ensure family of products is described at the end of this guide.
  • Serve food attractively and in a pleasing atmosphere. Vary the colors of foods on your plate and use garnishes such as lemon or lime wedges. Colorful place settings and soft background music make mealtimes more enjoyable, too.
  • Walk the dog before you eat. Light exercise may help stimulate your appetite.
  • Plan to eat your biggest meal of the day when you're most hungry, even if that's early in the day. Eat the foods you enjoy whenever you like, even if it's not a usual mealtime.
