8 Tips for Adding Calories
Printer-friendly version
If you're troubled by weight loss, adding extra calories to your diet may help. You'll find high-calorie foods are your ally. Follow these tips for adding calories to your nutritional base.
- Melt butter or margarine onto hot foods such as toast, soups, vegetables, cooked cereals, rice, and soft-boiled eggs. One teaspoon will give you about 30 extra calories.
- Try sour cream on foods other than baked potatoes — for instance, on meats and fruits. One tablespoon of regular sour cream contains about 30 calories.
- Choose mayonnaise instead of salad dressing for use in meat salads, in deviled eggs, and on lettuce. Mayonnaise provides about twice the calories of salad dressing.
- Serve peanut butter — also high in protein — with an apple, banana, or pear, or spread it on a sandwich with mayonnaise. One tablespoon of peanut butter will give you about 90 calories and provide 4 grams of protein.
- Top puddings, pies, hot chocolate, fruit, gelatin, and other desserts with whipped cream. Cook with heavy cream instead of milk. Two tablespoons of whipped cream or heavy cream offer approximately 100 calories.
- Eat several smaller meals daily, rather than three larger meals.
- Sprinkle nuts or seeds on foods. For instance, serve on vegetables, salads, and pasta. Or sprinkle on desserts such as fruits, ice cream, pudding, and custard.
- Sip high-calorie drinks, such as milkshakes or medical nutritional products, such as Ensure® and Ensure Plus.
