8 Tips to Relieve Dry or Sore Mouth and Throat

Printer-friendly version

If treatment is making your mouth and throat uncomfortable, try these tips.
  • Try moist and liquid foods such as soups and stews. They may be easier to chew and swallow.
  • If you're not nauseated, try using melted butter, margarine, gravy, sauces, syrups, or broth as a moistener. Dunk foods in coffee, tea, or milk.
  • Eat soft, cold foods such as ice cream, frozen fruit-juice bars, watermelon, and grapes. They may feel and taste better than other foods.
  • Drink through a straw to make swallowing easier.
  • Avoid spices that bother you.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages and highly acidic foods, like citrus juices and tomatoes. Try fruit juices such as apple juice and apricot nectar instead.
  • Try medical nutritional products such as Ensure®, Ensure High Protein, Ensure Plus, and Ensure Pudding. They are a smooth, easy-to-swallow way to get the nutrients your body needs.
  • If mouth and throat pain become severe, talk with your doctor for other solutions.
